Provide professional development opportunities that serve to increase educators’ skills, attitudes, and knowledge of educationally sound practices in ECE, Jewish ECE, and family engagement as well as increase leadership capacity of directors, educators and leadership teams.
In 2008, the Colorado Jewish ECE Initiative (the “Initiative”) was created to build Jewish identity, ensure quality early learning experiences at Jewish ECE Centers, and provide access to education for all families. The Initiative focuses on improving quality in Jewish ECE (Early Childhood Education) and ensuring that ECE centers reflect current progressive pedagogical approaches.
The Initiative serves ten ECEs in Denver and Boulder. Over 1,000 children are enrolled, representing diverse ethnic, religious and socio-economic backgrounds. 225 educators are employed through the ECEs.
The Initiative provides professional development for ECE professionals through:
• The First 36 Project (focus on parent engagement),
• Annual Cohort Trip and learning,
• Community of Practice Learning,
• Reflective Supervision,
• Foundations class with Colorado Association for Infant Mental Health (CoAIMH),
• One on one coaching for teachers and administrators,
• Annual Conference for all Jewish ECE Educators and leaders.
Through these programs, the Initiative expects to support professional development while increasing ECE capacity, increase family engagement, and school readiness.
The Initiative strives to increase public awareness of the value of Jewish ECE, the quality of the practices in the programs, connection and access for children. The ECEs engaged in the Initiative establish Leadership teams with representation of stakeholders across the organization. In addition, the Project Director of the Initiative is engaged with state advocacy and leadership conversations about quality ECE education and access to this education, beyond the realm of the Jewish ECEs.
The initiative will strengthen the pipeline of leaders in Jewish ECE, continuing to strengthen and sustain quality in pedagogical practice, build awareness of the work and the accomplishments of the Initiative and cultivate new donors and sources of income in order to be more sustainable.
